Gatineau Buckingham is an ancient city located on the south shore of the River St. Lawrence in the outlying part of the Province of Quebec, Canada. As of January 2020, it's officially part of the new amalgamated town of Gatineau, that combines five former towns, including Hull, Buckingham, Masson-Auvergne, Hull and Aylmer, into one entity. The original Gatineau was first established in 1759 as a small fishing village.

The name, however, has evolved over the years as well as the town itself. Initially, the name Buckingham was given to the entire town by King Louis XIV of France, who was the largest landowner in Canada at that time. He then changed the name to Gatineau until he could think of a suitable one. It stuck, and now it is commonly referred to as the town of Buckingham.

The original downtown area of this town has always been one of its most interesting features: the beautiful cobblestone streets that have been laid with bricks during the late 19th century, with most of them having survived for more than two hundred years now. You can walk along these cobblestone streets for as long as you want, marveling at the beauty that still remains intact from when the cobblestones were first laid down.

You'll also find many different historical buildings in this area. Some of the older ones are well preserved and are the actual home of former mayor, Louis Robert, as well as other notable personalities from the past. You can see the remains of old-fashioned, traditional shops that sell goods for their locals and visitors alike. At the same time, you'll also be able to explore the modern shopping centers that you can visit and shop for your household items.

Many of these buildings in this historic town of Brunswick are still intact as well. One of the most impressive ones is the old-fashioned and ornate Cathedral of St. Catherine of Siena, one of only three such cathedrals in Canada and considered to be one of the most impressive in the entire world.

You should also take time to drive through the various parts of Brunswick that are still occupied by homes as well. Here, you will find some of the oldest homes in all of Canada. that date back to the French and early American periods, and can even boast some beautiful gardens that are still intact. Of course, if you enjoy hiking and biking, you can do so in these areas as well, although not necessarily to get into the historical and architectural areas, but instead for exercise and enjoyment.
